According to a book written by Ajahn Brahm, He mentions that there are 2 types of Freedom: Freedom of Desires and Freedom from Desires.
Freedom of Desires is the liberty to experiencing anything you want. In a broader meaning; you’re allowed to speak up your mind, you’re allowed to draw whatever you want to draw, you’re free to live your life as you wanted, you are free to choose whatever you want to eat, etc.
Meanwhile Freedom from Desires has an exact opposite meaning. It’s is called freedom when you are able to give away all your desire. So, I guess it’s more like the saying: “just go with the flow”
It brings me realize that indeed he is right! Surprisingly Freedom of Desires that I’ve always been adored has a little flaw. Flaws that make me suffer if I can’t get it. It is because most of the time, when I couldn’t speak whatever I have in mind, or when I couldn’t draw a masterpiece drawing, or I couldn’t live the life I wanted, I get super frustrated. It saddens me when I can’ let my desires out and yell it to the world. There are always things get in the way while someone wants to perform this “Freedom of Desire”.
Now that if only I can performing the “Freedom from Desire”, I might able to let go all the dream and decisions that I think is my absolute rights to decide. By this, I might not feel that I’m being violated, nor feel like living in “jail”.
But then again, as a dreamer, will I be able to live happily by letting go all the dream and go-with-the-flow instead?
